Families rarely notice it all at once. First the thin strokes inside the dates disappear. Then the middle row of an epitaph fades out. That is the moment lettering restoration becomes necessary — the professional refilling of carved inscriptions on a memorial.
Why DIY painting damages granite
Household enamels seep beyond the cut, leave bright halos around each letter, and trap moisture against the stone. Within a season the paint flakes and the granite shows pink staining that can only be removed by abrasive means.
Our five-step process
1. Survey under raking light. 2. Gentle clean with D/2 and soft brushes. 3. Mask the surrounding face. 4. Hand-brush UV-stable, exterior-grade pigment into each cut. 5. Wipe the stone face clean so only the recessed cut holds the pigment.
Done well, a restoration lasts 10–15 years before any touch-up is needed.
